First edition. Serialised in the Saturday Evening Post earlier the same year.

'I am half-way through mapping out a new novel, which looks like being a pippin. I am going on a new system this time, making the scenario very full, putting in atmosphere and dialogue etc., so that when I come actually to write it the work will be easy. So far I have scenarioed it out to about the 40,000 word mark; and it has taken me 13,000 words to do it! I have now reached a point where deep thought is required. I am not sure I haven't got too much plot, and may have to jettison the best idea in the story. I suppose the secret of writing is to got through your stuff till you come on something you think is particularly good, and then cut it out.'
