London: Hutchinson, 2001
8vo, pp. 341. Original green boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Green endpapers. Illustrated dust jacket, author's photographic portrait to rear flap. Top edge just a little spotted, light age-toning to text block, but a near fine copy in a fine dust jacket.
First edition, INSCRIBED BY FAULKS TO HIS PUBLISHER SUE FREESTONE: 'For Sue -- No trade secrets, no breaches of contract, just a lo-calorie, non-smoking yet curiously enjoyable little confection.... With thanks and love from Sebastian 18 April 2001'.
Sue Freestone, publishing director at Heinemann, Hutchinson and Quercus over the course of her career, guided the early -- and then mature -- careers of many authors who became best sellers. As well as Faulks her list included Douglas Adams, Robert Harris and Stephen Fry. She also saw into print the books of political figures, among them Alastair Campbell, Tony Benn and Bill Clinton.
An excellent copy, with a distinguished association.
