DeLEEUW, Hendrik

Flower of Joy

New York: Lee Furman, 1939

8vo, pp. 241. Original grey coarse grain boards, lettered in brown to spine. Illustrated dust jacket. Top edge red, leading edge uncut. Offsetting to endpapers, spine ends a little bumped, but a near fine copy in a very good price-clipped dust jacket, spine slightly faded, and with some light edgewear most noticeable at spine ends, where there is a closed tear to head of spine,

First edition of this purportedly sober, academic assessment of the drug scene in the world's leading fleshpots and hellholes. That may have been the author's intention, but his publisher was having none of it: the dust jacket's front panel touts DeLeeuw as 'Author of "Cities of Sin"', and its rear panel carries a puff for a book called Cannibal Caravan, by Charles "Cannibal" Miller ('with 33 striking illustrations').
